Why did you choose your Faction?

A question that often comes up when you are talking to someone new to the game is choosing a faction, and why go with X or Y. Some of course might target the crew/faction/team that they feel has the most advantages however most, and especially I feel in the Malifaux community, it comes down to feel.

So we have each gathered our thoughts and put together a short blurb on why we have chosen our main faction(s).

Starting a new crew

Starting a new crew is something I tend to do every few months and I always start it with the best intentions "I'll paint this crew to a decent standard" or "I'll completely learn this crew and practice with them" (or the most favourite "after this I don't need any more models") Things don't always work this way as I am prone to saying "good enough" and then coasting through the rest of a project.
Because of this I'll never be able to tell you how to master a crew or how to win a painting contest but what I can tell you is how I go about starting a new project.

Introducing Lady J

It has been an age since I have added some content to our blog which is pretty shocking considering that while it was Insidious' brain child I did partner up to get it going.

My excuses are pretty straight forward, I'm now a dad, work is busy and have been gaming and painting instead of writing.

So, on with the post. Introducing Lady J is today's topic. She was the second Guild master I purchased, after Sonnia and I have really taken to her and run with her in the last two comps I have attended winning 4 and 3 losing, so while not stellar the loses were close (one due to a silly mistake by allowing a Flesh Golem to reactivate) and generally against masters I had never seen before which always shakes things up.

Sorting the good from the bad (pt1)

Well I’ve been playing Malifaux for coming up to a year now. I’ve enjoyed it loads and thought I’d share some of my reflections on what I’ve learned as I gorge on Chocolate Eggs.

I’ve played the Viktorias, Nicodem, Mei Fang and Yan Lo as my masters so far. I don’t tend to master swap for strategies or schemes. I have Misaki, Kirai, Von Schill, Seamus and McMourning waiting for a go on the table.

I thought I’d list some things I’ve learned, good habits and bad habbits.

Friendly competition

Just a short post to talk about my current plan to make the players at the club a bit more competitive.

This comes from the fact that as a group we are starting to attend more tournaments and most of us are fairly causal players.

So the plan is to introduce a challenge system into the club. Starting with the Henchman (me) there will be the title of club TopHat. Then each week people can challenge the holder of the hat and if you win you become the new holder of the TopHat and current top player.

The idea is add a competitive element to players who want it without turning the whole club into a weekly tournament.

It's too early to tell yet if it's had any effect but time will tell if the Abnormalifaux and Dark Sphere players start creeping up the rankings.

I'll post a follow up in a few months to let you know how it's going.

The rules are below if you're interested let me know what you think.

Viktorias (Insidiously Mad) vs Sonnia (Dr Walnut) Battle Report

Crew Selection
So after declaring guild and seeing the stratagies and schemes available I had to try cobble together a crew. Now it's worth mentioning I'm far from an expert at this game so think of this as an example in what can happen instead of a lesson in what should.

So when choosing a crew I start with the strategy, first choosing a master that can handle the strategy and then adding what they need to work. In this case that was Sonnia, good table control, consistent damage output and a summoning ability all seemed like good skills to have for recconitor. To compliment this I added 3 witchling stalkers and the faithful Samuel. This would be my main crew with a focus on burning and damage dealing to control the table quarters.

Next up I looked at the schemes with the Sonnia and friend being on the slow side I aimed for scheme that involved a minimum amount of walking. In this case line in the sand and make them suffer.
To help add a bit of mobility I also included 2 death marshals and the alway great Lone Marshal.
Final part of the hiring phase for me is upgrades. For Sonnia Cheafe imprint to give me a flame wall to throw around and reincarnation to summon in some more stalkers later on. Samuel had lead lined coat to try and reduce his glass cannon-ness.

#TOMB2 Month 2: Painted Models

Alright it looks like I (barely) finished in time again. Here are the two models I have done...

Nowhere near as much to say as about the last models as there are only 2 models to paint and neither of them required as much inspiration as painting the silurids or Zoraida did. The nurse I decided to go with white and pink and bright blue heels as a highlight colour so she would pop a bit more (although they ended up getting a bit hidden by the basing). This is the first time I have painted quite a lot of white in a while and also one of the few human models I have painted so I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out. I'm pretty happy with the end result. I tried to do proper stocking, ie. partially see-through, by painting her legs in skin tones and then doing a really watered down layer of white. It looks great from a distance but doesn't stand up as well to close inspection so I may need to work on that technique a bit more, but overall pretty glad how it turned out. Ended up giving the Nurse Brooke Shields eyebrows rather than smaller ones as I used too large a brush, but kind of like the character it gives her so decided not to repaint them.

Should I go to a tournament?

I'm going to briefly talk about going tournaments but not how to go and win or how to get the most out of your crew in five turns I'm just going to discus the question...

"should I go to a tournament?".
Firstly you don't have to be the best player to go to a tournament you don't even need to a good player. From experience you just need to be a competent player. I will be the first to admit that I am a poor player easily the worst in our group but I know enough to make it through a game and that's all I've needed to enjoy tournament games.
